Flames Rip Through Corbières Mountains, Leaving Destruction Behind (Social media)

International News: A huge forest fire has broken out in southern France, becoming the most severe in the last ten years. The blaze started on Tuesday and quickly spread through large areas of woodland, destroying everything in its path. So far, one person has lost their life, and thousands of firefighters are working day and night to control the flames.

Fire Spreads Across Corbières Mountains

The wildfire began in the Aude region and moved rapidly across the Corbières mountain range. Strong winds and extremely dry conditions have made it hard to stop the fire. Over 2,000 firefighters have been deployed, along with several planes that drop water to slow down the spread. Even with these efforts, the flames are still active.

By Thursday morning, cooler night air and calmer winds gave some relief, but later in the day, wind speeds picked up again, causing fresh challenges for the firefighting teams.

Scenes of Destruction and Heartbreak

Mayor Xavier de Volontat of Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse said the damage is painful to see. The once green and beautiful land is now burned and covered in ash. He warned that it will take years for the forests and communities to fully recover from the destruction.

People Moved to Safety

Residents living in nearby towns, as well as tourists, have been told to stay indoors unless told to leave. Those who had to escape the fire have been moved to temporary shelters in 17 different towns. These shelters are providing food, bedding, and safety to families who had to leave their homes quickly.

Cause Under Investigation

Authorities are still looking into what started the fire. Experts believe hot weather, dry forests, and climate change have made the area more likely to face such disasters. Across southern Europe, wildfires have become more common and more powerful in recent summers.

Climate Change Adding to the Risk

Scientists warn that rising temperatures and long dry spells are increasing the number and severity of wildfires in this region. This summer, several countries in southern Europe have already faced similar large-scale fires, leading to evacuations and serious environmental loss.

Firefighters in France are hoping to bring the blaze under control soon, but they know the fight is not over. With wind and dry conditions still a threat, the situation could worsen if the weather changes suddenly. For now, the people affected can only wait for the flames to be fully contained and hope for no further loss of life.
